Dye Transfer Prints

My dye transfer prints are all made using original Kodak papers and dyes. The paper stock is double- or triple-weight fiber base with an air-dried F surface. The prints have at least 1" of white paper around the image area, and I title and sign the prints in archival ink under the image.

Comet Halley Against Milky Way ~ 1986

Comet Halley glows in cool cyan, set against the backdrop of the Milky Way in the Sagittarius-Scorpio region of the sky. The Milky Way provides a stunning backdrop in smoky blues and browns, sparkling with the fiery nebulae and blue white diamondlike star clusters. The Galactic cente is shrouded in dust, near the upper left corner. (459K JPEG)

Comet Hyakutake Inner Tail ~ March 29, 1996

Comet Hyakutake stretches across the frame, from its lovely green and cyan coma to its twin tails, one a very delicate and subtle dusty yellow and the other the cold icy blue of ions. The comet passed so close to Earth that even in this five-minute exposure it moved visibly against the fixed background of the stars, which show slight streaks as a result. (197K JPEG)

Comet Hyakutake Coma, Brooks CA -- 1996

The copper-green glow of the comet's distinctive wedge-shaped white coma contrasts with the warm hues of the inner tail trailing behind. Orange, white and yellow stars dapple the dusky background and shine through the tenuous tail in this pointillistic photograph. (125K JPEG)

Comet Hyakutake, March 29 -- 1996

The comet's tenuous yellow and blue tail stretches across this wide-field view of the pre-dawn sky. The comet's green and white head contrasts with the dim orange glow on the horizon and the thousands of stars that fill the sky. (149K JPEG)

Moon, Mars & Circumlunar Arcs, Anchor Bay, CA -- 1995

Cool grays, blacks and delicate rainbow colors that tinge the circumlunar arcs hanging above ruddy Mars in a starry sky. The full moon casts its intense and pearly glow behind almost-silhouetted pine trees. (118K JPEG)

Moonrise at Dawn over Haleakala, Maui -- 1986

(IMPORTANT: ONLY THREE PRINTS LEFT. SEE NEW PRICES.)

Photographed from the summit of Haleakala, a very thin crescent moon hangs in a brilliant blue dawn sky, just above the wisps of pale yellow fog, all above a purple and blue cloud deck. A very popular image. (111K JPEG)

Baily's Beads & Chromosphere, Cabo Pulmo Mexico ~ 1991

(IMPORTANT: ONLY TWO PRINTS LEFT. SEE NEW PRICES.)

The very last moments of the solar eclipse of 1991. The sun is just reappearing around the edge of the moon; a bit of a magenta-hued prominence can be seen hanging above the rim. Off to the sides, the cherry-red chromosphere still glows, not yet obscured by the rapidly increasing glare of the sun. (209K JPEG)

Inner Corona and Prominences, Cabo Pulmo Mexico ~ 1991

(IMPORTANT: ONLY TWO PRINTS LEFT. SEE NEW PRICES.)

Blue white wisps of corona fan out like delicate petals around the black disk of the obscuring moon. Pink-white prominences hang above the solar surface, delicately painted against the arching coronal plumes. (86K JPEG)

Prominences and Chromosphere, Cabo Pulmo Mexico ~ 1991

(IMPORTANT: LAST PRINT LEFT! SEE NEW PRICES.)

A striking “horse-head” prominence rears up from the surface of the sun in glorious magenta splendor, while small wicks of magenta flame issue on the opposite rim. The prominences stand against the backdrop of the cool blues of the inner solar corona, while bits of the cherry-colored chromosphere peak around the edge of the moon. (82K JPEG)

This is an exceptionally fine image of a solar eclipse. Set in a dusky and dark blue sky, the full extent of the corona is visible out to four or more solar radii. The delicate nature of the corona is preserved in the fine inner detail, all the way in to the pale pink prominences just barely visible near the silhouette of the moon. This screen image cannot convey the fine tracery in the corona and subtle detail present in the real print. (111K JPEG)

Sun Setting under Blue Arcs, Herring Cove Beach MA ~ 2004

It was an intense and amazing sunset. I exaggerate nothing in this print. If anything, it only can approach the deep, rich blues, reds, and oranges of the real scene. The kind of photograph dye transfer printing was made for, conveying that hyperreal quality of reality. (195K JPEG)

Contrail and Cloud Arcs, Herring Cove Beach MA ~ 2004

(IMPORTANT: ONLY THREE PRINTS LEFT. SEE NEW PRICES.)

Post-sunset, the most delicate blues, indigos, and violets suffused the sky. The various hues form a contrasting background for the still-sunlit, slightly-rosy clouds. (165K JPEG)

Fiery Clouds and Blue Arcs, Herring Cove Beach MA ~ 2004

(IMPORTANT: ONLY THREE PRINTS LEFT. SEE NEW PRICES.)

A flaming sunset in a dark blue sky burns with saturated reds and oranges, molten golds, and incandescent yellows. This most vivid print does not at all exaggerate the intensity of tone and color in the original scene. (217K JPEG)

Red Rainbow, OR ~ 1977

Only minutes before sunset, the rays of the sun are filtered ruddy by their long passage through the atmosphere to create this delicate golden red and yellow rainbow. It hangs suspended in a pink-dappled sky and is reflected in the soft gray greens of the pond, surrounded by the subtle forest greens of this restful landscape. (201K JPEG)

Forest Fire Smoke, Julian CA -- 1990

(IMPORTANT: LAST PRINT LEFT! SEE NEW PRICES.)

This is not some "special effect" created on film or in the darkroom-- it's real. The great forest fires in Southern California create a deep grey-brown layer of smoke high in the pale blue sky that hangs over the darkly-shadowed hills. The smoke filters the sunlight into rich golden-yellow hues reminiscent of Renaissance paintings. The fine overall grain texture contributes to the painterly effect. (102K JPEG)

(IMPORTANT: ONLY THREE PRINTS LEFT. SEE NEW PRICES.)

Late afternoon rainstorms in Arizona clear near sunset, allowing the sun to cast the buttes in rich chocolate tones under a sky suffused with pale violets, fiery oranges, and a lovely, warm-hued rainbow that arcs down from the heights. (164K JPEG)

Diamond Ring, Yakima WA ~ 1979

Enough of the sun peeks around the edge of the moon at the end of the 1979 total solar eclipse to illuminate the surrounding clouds. The wonderful refractive rainbow pattern is dominated by blues, yellows, and pinks with hints of greens and oranges. The inner corona is still visible around the edge of the sun; the sky hasn't yet brightened enough to completely wipe it out. (250K JPEG)
