Matrix and Work Print Sets

These are unique items ~ the actual sets of matrices from which I made my dye transfer prints, along with my reference work print with marginal printing notes. There's only one set for each photograph; when it's sold, it's gone. I've already sold over half of the sets, so don't put off ordering the one you like. It may not be here tomorrow!

Hapu'u Forest, Volcanoes National Park HI ~ 2000

Lava Tube and Ashes, Bird Park HI ~ 2000
A fast-moving forest fire destroyed the grasses and sedges that hid this subterranean lava tube, now revealed in shades of charcoal brown against a stark black and white landscape. (340K JPEG)

Seared Ohi'a and Koa Trees, Bird Park HI ~ 2000
The short-lived forest fire burnt quickly and hot, reducing the landscape to monochrome ash while leaving the dead trees standing with their leaves intact. There were just a few hints of color, patches of browns and greens, left in this desolate scene. (229K JPEG)

Pahoehoe Slabs and Burnt Sedge, Bird Park HI ~ 2000
Forest fire cleared away the ground cover leaving behind only charcoal blacks and stark whites, spotted with brown leaves. The large sand-colored underlying slabs of pahoehoe are evidence of the volcanic origins of this tropical isle.(406K JPEG)

Forest Fire Aftermath, Bird Park HI ~ 2000
Autumnal colors appear to dominate the tree's foliage, but in fact they are the browns and reds of seared leaves. They stand out against the blackened tree trunks and intense black and pale tans of the scarred landscape, under a gloomy sky. (393K JPEG)

Jewels of Kilauea-- the fascinating and colorful lava of the southern Big Island of Hawai'i.
The question I'm asked most often about this work is whether or not the colors are real; some viewers have wondered if they were somehow created by me. The answer is that the colors and tones in the following photographs are entirely natural. They are not the result of special photographic tricks. I made all the photographs with natural lighting, and I didn't use any special filters to create or enhance the existing color.
In truth, the 'black' pahoehoe lava flows of Kilauea are anything but dull and monochrome!
The subjects of these photographs range in size from several feet across down to one inch.

'Fiery' Pahoehoe, Kilauea HI -- 2000
Brilliant rust-red banding on these cold boulders creates the impression of glowing molten lava under a cooling gray-black mantle. (216K JPEG)

Tortoise Shell Pahoehoe and Ferns, HI ~ 2002
Silver dapples the black pahoehoe, which is tinted with subtle shades of blue and brown. Newly sprouted ferns are among the first plants to colonize fresh pahoehoe; their electric yellows and greens present a striking contrast. (430K JPEG)

This is the very last dye transfer print I made before shutting down the darkroom for good.

Lava Icicles & Stalagmites, Pua Po'o Lava Tube HI ~ 2000
As hot molten rock seeps through the walls of the lava tube, it cools into thin icicles of shiny black rock. The molten rock that drips off the tips forms fantastic matching stalagmites dappled with browns and golds that glow against the stark blackness of the lava walls. (225K JPEG)

Actinomyces Colonies, Pua Po'o Lava Tube HI ~ 2000
Actinomyces bacteria colonize the walls of the lava tube. Captured with flash, they are a brilliant pinkish white against the inky lava, in a scene that resembles a star-filled astrophotograph. (242K JPEG)

Forest Fire Smoke, Julian CA -- 1990
This is not some "special effect" created on film or in the darkroom-- it's real. The great forest fires in Southern California create a deep grey-brown layer of smoke high in the pale blue sky that hangs over the darkly-shadowed hills. The smoke filters the sunlight into rich golden-yellow hues reminiscent of Renaissance paintings. The fine overall grain texture contributes to the painterly effect. (102K JPEG)

STS 1 Landing Glide, Edwards AFB CA ~ 1981

Floodlight Beams over Cape Canaveral ~ 1975
Photographed the night before the launch of the Apollo-Soyuz mission, this photograph shows the floodlight beams from the lights used to illuminate the launch pad. The beams pass overhead; as they enter the clear air over the ocean, they seem to cut off in mid-space. A dark image in very deep blues verging on, but never quite reaching, black. (84K JPEG)

Spacelab Cradle, Kennedy Space Center FL -- 1981

Another of my most popular photographs. It reminds some people of Magritte, others of Escher. The red sandstone of the National Center for Atmospheric Research is muted down to a nearly neutral grey-pink by the cold overcast sky, bits of which are reflected in the puddles. 	Forest Fire Smoke, Julian CA -- 1990 This is not some "special effect" created on film or in the darkroom-- it's real. The great forest fires in Southern California create a deep grey-brown layer of smoke high in the pale blue sky that hangs over the darkly-shadowed hills. The smoke filters the sunlight into rich golden-yellow hues reminiscent of Renaissance paintings. The fine overall grain texture contributes to the painterly effect. 	Irish Gravesite Amidst Palms, Mission Dolores S.F. ~ 1992 Protected from the sun by dark green palms, the gravesite and statuary appeared in shades of deepest, coldest blue, just visible in the shadowy landscape. 	Patio with Trees and Puddles, NCAR, Boulder CO -- 1982 Another of my most popular photographs. It reminds some people of Magritte, others of Escher. The red sandstone of the National Center for Atmospheric Research is muted down to a nearly neutral grey-pink by the cold overcast sky, bits of which are reflected in the puddles.
