Print Request Instructions

1) Send me an email using this link. If it fails for you (it does for about 1% of viewers for unknown reasons) email ctein@pobox.com and put "My Print Requests" - exactly those words - in the subject line.

The email should contain only the following print request information:

  • How many prints you want to buy (e.g. "I would like to buy three prints.")
  • The titles of the prints you want, including alternative selections, if any.

You can rank the titles by preference as you like, or not. If the photograph is available in more than one print size (if it is, that's indicated in the listings below), make sure you state which size you want. If there's only one size, give only the title.

2) That's it! Pretty simple, huh? Don't include your mailing address, payment information, any special shipping requests, bonus prints you'd like, anything else at this point. All that gets taken care of after I confirm your selection and send a link to the order page. You will place your actual order there, following the instructions posted.

I'll send you an acknowledgment of your email within an hour of receipt (unless I'm asleep -- remember I'm on Pacific Standard Time and won't be on the computer from roughly 1:00 AM until 10:00 AM). If you don't get a prompt acknowledgment, send your request again.

Within 24 hours of your request, I'll confirm which print(s) you can buy. In all likelihood it will be a lot less than 24 hours (if none of your choices are available, I will let you know that very quickly).

I've listed the number of prints I have of each photograph right below the title. I'll update this information as promptly as I can, but it will lag behind confirmed sales. I will make an effort to match up people's choices and alternatives with print availability to maximize happiness (and sales), but there will be - of necessity! - a very strong "first come, first served" component.

About the Dye Transfer Prints

My dye transfer prints were all made using original Kodak papers and dyes. The paper stock is double- or triple-weight fiber base with an air-dried F surface. The prints have 1" or more of white paper around the image area. The printed area is generally not centered on the paper; some margins are larger than others. I title and sign the prints in archival ink under the image and sign and date them on the back in graphite.

Some prints have minor imperfections or smaller-than-usual margins. This'll either be noted in the descriptions or will be in your confirmation email, so you can decide if you still want that print. A few are vintage prints and are labeled as such; they may have more visible defects, if so that is noted in the description. If you have questions about any of these prints or need more details, please send me an inquiry.

What are dye transfer prints? This article will tell you all about how these ultra-fine photographic prints were made.

Jewels of Kilauea-- the fascinating and colorful lava of the southern Big Island of Hawai'i.

The question I'm asked most often about this work is whether or not the colors are real; some viewers have wondered if they were somehow created by me. The answer is that the colors and tones in the following photographs are entirely natural. They are not the result of special photographic tricks. I made all the photographs with natural lighting, and I didn't use any special filters to create or enhance the existing color.

In truth, the 'black' pahoehoe lava flows of Kilauea are anything but dull and monochrome!

The subjects of these photographs range in size from several feet across down to one inch.

Solar One, Barstow CA -- 1982

(1 PRINT)

This is a formal composition of a very surreal scene I chanced upon in the Mojave desert. When the boiler isn't operating, the computer-controlled mirrors of the Solar One power station redirect all their beams into two spots in the air on either side of the boiler tower, to avoid an accidental melt-down.

Pale blue sky, and sandy tans dominate the color scheme. (141K JPEG)

15" wide by 19" high (image area)
