My Jim Marshall Prints

Here's the story...

I was Jim Marshall's color printer for the last decade of his life, making dye transfer and digital prints for him. Jim was one of the all-time great rock and jazz performer photographers. So many famous photographs. Remember Johnny Cash giving the finger to the camera? Or Jimi Hendrix on his knees setting fire to his guitar? Jim. You can read my obituary for him here.

Jim was generous to his friends. He told me to make a print for myself of any photograph I printed for him and he'd sign it. Over a decade it added up to quite a portfolio! Since his death I've sold off about two-thirds of my holdings. The prints I'm offering below are what remains in my collection. (Please don't ask me about the availability of a Jim Marshall photograph that isn't shown below. I won't know anything about that. You should contact Jim Marshall Photography LLC.)

The prices given below are firm: Please don't try to haggle or tell me you can get it from so-and-so for less. If you can, by all means buy it from them! If you want to buy three prints at one time, I'll give you a 15% discount. If you want to make me an offer for everything, I'll knock the price down by a third and pay the shipping costs myself (registered and insured shipping is normally in the range of $100 a print). I prefer personal checks for payment, but Paypal is fine, too. They will also process credit cards, which I'm not set up for.

You can also buy prints on layaway.

Please contact me about availability and shipping charges (which are extra) before sending me any money.

Finally, an important note:

If you buy a print of a Jim Marshall photograph, you are not buying any intellectual property or usage rights to the image. (Actually, that's true of any photograph, but Jim's work gets ripped off a lot, so I'm giving this special mention.) You can do anything you want with the print, but you cannot reproduce, distribute or use the photographic image on it in any way. If you wish to obtain usage rights to a Jim Marshall photograph contact Jim Marshall Photography LLC.

If you have any questions, my email link is at the bottom of the page. Feel free to contact me.

SIGNED DYE TRANSFER COLOR PRINTS

These prints are all printed on oversize paper with 1" or greater white borders, signed and titled and marked "A/P" on front by Jim Marshall in ink, signed and dated with the printing date on the back in graphite by me. None of these are so-called "vintage" prints-- they are all prints made by me for Jim Marshall between mid-2001 and mid-2009.

Usually I don't know how many dye transfer prints were made of a particular photograph, because Jim had dye transfer prints made by Frog Prince up through the mid 1990s. In two cases I do, because I made all the prints. I've noted that in the listings below. I do not know if all the prints I made for Jim were signed by him, so it is possible that there are fewer signed prints.

SIGNED ULTRACHROME K3 DIGITAL COLOR PRINTS

There are very few digital prints signed by Jim; in most cases there are only two! I know because I did all Jim's digital printing while he was alive, between September 2009 and March 2010. The numbers below include the print I own and any that Jim Marshall Photography LLC may still have. Since most of these photos were printed for a show Jim had the last fall of his life, it should be assumed that all existing prints were signed.

The dimensions indicated are approximate image areas; most have 2 inch or larger white borders all around. The prints are signed by Jim in the lower right margin, but they are not titled on the left like the dye transfers. They are signed and dated with the printing date on back in graphite by me.

Johnny Cash in Studio at Mike ~ 15" x 22" (2 prints in existence)
(An interesting sidenote. This was the only time when this photograph was printed properly during Jim's lifetime. He shot this in a studio that was lit with fluorescent lights on his usual slide film, so it came out bilious green. All previous prints of that photograph reflected that. I told Jim I could fix. He loved it, so that's how we printed the two digital prints.)

UNSIGNED ULTRACHROME K3 DIGITAL COLOR PRINTS

I also have three very large prints (circa 30" x 40" image areas) that were made under Jim's supervision, but I never got them signed by him before he died. Accordingly, their price, relative to their size, is low. No more than 2 or 3 prints were ever made in this size.
