My Dye Transfer Prints
|
| My dye transfer prints are all made using original Kodak papers and dyes. The paper stock is double- or triple-weight fiber base with an air-dried F surface. The prints have at least 1" of white paper around the image area, and I title and sign the prints in archival ink under the image.
What are dye transfer prints? This article will tell you all about how these ultra-fine photographic prints are made.

Framed Print
Should you choose to purchase a framed print, this is typical of what you'd get. You have a choice of double-mattes, as shown here, or a single off-white matte. All materials in contact with the print are archival and the print is not dry-mounted, but taped to the matte. The glazing is acrylic, which can't shatter in shipping. If you wish to replace it with picture glass, be my guest.

Sealing Wax Palm, HI ~ 2000

The sealing wax palm is named for the brilliant red stalks it sends out, reminiscent of the wax used to seal documents. Intense reds butt up against equally intense greens in the shady tropical light.

The spectacular fronds of the Traveller's Tree come together in a tight weave that catches water (from which the tree gets its name). Rich tropical colors line the fronds- brilliant reds and oranges, dusky olive yellows and greens and deep emerald hues.

Ferns are among the first plants to colonize fresh pahoehoe, drawing nutrients from the air and the minerals in the lava and breaking it down into soil that other plants can root in. A lone hapu'u fern spreads its vivid red and green fronds in a crevice in the striped and patterned yellow and charcoal-gray lava sheets, under a dusky blue tropical sky. (360K JPEG)

Jewels of Kilauea-- the fascinating and colorful lava of the southern Big Island of Hawai'i.
The question I'm asked most often about this work is whether or not the colors are real; some viewers have wondered if they were somehow created by me. The answer is that the colors and tones in the following photographs are entirely natural. They are not the result of special photographic tricks. I made all the photographs with natural lighting, and I didn't use any special filters to create or enhance the existing color.
In truth, the 'black' pahoehoe lava flows of Kilauea are anything but dull and monochrome!
The subjects of these photographs range in size from several feet across down to one inch.

Comet Hyakutake stretches across the frame, from its lovely green and cyan coma to its twin tails, one a very delicate and subtle dusty yellow and the other the cold icy blue of ions. The comet passed so close to Earth that even in this five-minute exposure it moved visibly against the fixed background of the stars, which show slight streaks as a result.

This is an exceptionally fine image of a solar eclipse. Set in a dusky and dark blue sky, the full extent of the corona is visible out to four or more solar radii. Enough of the sun peeks around the edge of the moon at the end of the 1979 total solar eclipse to illuminate the surrounding clouds. The wonderful refractive rainbow pattern is dominated by blues, yellows, and pinks with hints of greens and oranges. The inner corona is still visible around the edge of the sun; the sky hasn't yet brightened enough to completely wipe it out.

This lighthouse is reputed to be the most-photographed in the world, but the beacon's reflection in the twilight waves has never been rendered this finely. Crepuscular Rays, Clear Lake CA ~ 1992
Pink crepuscular rays streak a sunset sky that varies from purple and deep royal blue through cyan to hot orange, striped with glowing fiery clouds (the screen image doesn't do this one justice). Lake Shasta and Mount Lassen, CA ~ 1991
An extraordinarily clear day at Lake Shasta, when the water levels were extraordinarily low, revealed glowing orange, brown, and tan bands on the banks of the reservoir. The water reflected a near-indigo sky in contrast with dusty cyan light near the horizon, whose color suffuses Mount Lassen in the distance. Green forest completes the pallete of rich colors in this photograph.

Trojan Plant Cooling Tower, OR ~ 1977

The steam plumes from this nuclear plant created billowing cumulus-like puffs that seem to blend naturally into the late afternoon sky. The waning rays of the sun cast everything in warm tones of yellows, oranges, and olives, save for the insistent dusky blue of the distant sky.

Trojan Nuclear Plant Cooling Tower, OR ~ 1992

The preceding photograph was made shortly after the Trojan plant was commissioned. This one was made shortly before it was decommissioned. The mood and colors stand in contrast, as well. The tower's aircraft warning lights bathe the tower and plume in a brilliant hellish red and orange glow that stands out against dusky blue-purple clouds. (184K JPEG)

Power Lines Sunset, L.A. ~ 1972

Smoggy sunsets can make for lovely light. The last rays of the setting sun tint the sky and the landscape a panoply of lovely warm hues ranging from deep purple-magentas in the shadows through reds and oranges, shading into a delicate lavender sky.

The dome of the InfraRed Telescope Facility is lined with foil to suppress radiation that would blind this heat-sensitive telescope. It catches the daylight in wonderfully textured shades of steel grays and blues and subtle delicate browns. (205K JPEG)

Moon and Fireworks, Vancouver EXPO ~ 1986
This strikingly surreal and colorful image looks like a computer-generated composite, but it's entirely real. Hot pink fireworks fill half the dark green-black sky with incredibly delicate tracery. A full moon hangs in the sky over the geodesic roof of the entrance to the 1986 World's Fair. (289K JPEG)

This is an image of a three or four inch section of expanded metal screen. The blue and white squiggles come from light shining through windows glazed with rippled privacy glass. Primary colors are blue and pumpkin yellow, with some deep purple. (192K JPEG)

Solar One, Barstow CA ~ 1982

This is a formal composition of a very surreal scene I chanced upon in the Mojave desert. When the boiler isn't operating, the computer-controlled mirrors of the Solar One power station redirect all their beams into two spots in the air on either side of the boiler tower, to avoid an accidental melt-down.
Pale blue sky, and sandy tans dominate the color scheme. (141K JPEG)

Transamerica Pyramid, S.F. ~ 1976
This nighttime photograph of the Transamerica building seems to have true vanishing point perspective. The coloration in this print is both more subtle and more variegated than the monitor can convey. There are myriad delicate nuances of cyans, yellows, salmons and pinks playing over the different facets of the grey concrete facing and in the windows. (163K JPEG)

Walk/Don't Walk, Pasadena CA ~ 1972
This long exposure caught both the green and red illuminated tubes of a crossing sign, creating a visual illusion the eye could never see. Where the tubes overlapped in the exposure, green light combined with red to create various shades of oranges and yellows in a fascinating pattern of stripes and swirls around the bends of the tubes.

Corrugated Galvanized Steel, Julian CA ~ 1990
Corrosion creates an intricate pattern of colors and textures on the blue crystalline zinc coating on the steel. Streaks of vermillion and orange mix with intricate textures in the same hues. Warm tones and cold tones are mirrored in a counterpoint composition.
